The Olive (Olea europaea) is a species of small tree in the family Oleaceae, native to coastal areas of the eastern Mediterranean region, from Syria and the maritime parts of Asia Minor and northern Iran at the south end of the Caspian Sea. Its fruit, the olive, is of major agricultural importance in the Mediterranean region as the source of olive oil.
They are absolutely delicious from Greece… Hope this helps!

Findings in many archaeological sites bring up different items used for the extraction of oil and the storage of it. e.g the urns in Knossos where they store it. So it was here long before 4000 years. Olive trees are as old as the Elefsis Mysteries.
The “Iera Elia” was supposed to be standing on the way to Elefsis on Iera Odos”, on the left going out, close to old Athens Parermill, up until a few years back when a bus rammed the tree and left a small stub of it. By botanical research it was to be at least 20 centuries old. Hard to believe, but if they say so, why refute it. The different species of olive trees in Greece nowadays are the development of more recent research and species like “Koroneiki” is considered a very productive and good quality produce tree.
Different species are also used in Amfissa and Kalamata for edible olives. As to their origin who can say they were here and then taken there or vice versa.
One case documented of a different species brought from the Venetians is the Corfiot olive tree and the “trick” to make the local peasants to replant with that species was the substantial amount per new tree planted to change the olive grove of te island. That species was taken care in a different way than those of the rest of Greece. The quality was extra virgin 0 to 1 acidity but the sudden orientation of the peasants to the tourist trade was the decline of that quality.
As far as i know the oil from the Lygia region in Preveza is supposed to be of good quality, and the tress there are very productive.
