I live for tonight asked:

Last year from January until August, Greece brought 17.5 million tourists ( i dont know about the amount of the whole year since its not listed, but i am guessing — 20 million tourists in total in 2007 - since usually approximately 2-3 million tourists visit from September till December to Greece)

What are your predictions for 2008 ??

This is very good question you ask. One would think that with all the fires of last season, combined with the degradation of services in Greek Hotels and pensions, plus the value of what you actually pay for compared to Turkey, Italy, France etc, this number could drop.

I have a friend in the travel biz who seems to think that tourists are going elsewhere. Who can blame them. You come to Greece for a vacation and you find Garbage strikes, Electricity outages, and then to top it off the Acropolis was closed because of a strike.

I’m sorry but this is not the way to treat your tourists. My friend said he was told by a group of Greek-Americans that the best part of Greece was the boatride to Turkey where they spent a wonderful week. Now, sad when Ex-pat Greeks are espousing comments like this.

My tips to improve my predictions:

    - Sanction Rogue Taxi Drivers with immediate suspension for any infraction (i.e., rude behavior, overcharging, etc) as they do in comparable countries of equal quality, not to mention the superior quality countries.

    - Have every Greek hotelier, waiter, waitress, server, etc., take a mandatory class/seminar on how to smile, be polite, etc. Although Greeks seem to think us Westerners are fake because we smile, that’s only because they themselves are not used to that behavior and find it alien.

    - Increase the value for the money people are paying, or lower the prices in line with most countries of similar quality.

It’s quite common for people to dismiss an opinion such as mine, but I believe it takes a greater man/woman to reflect inward and say, “By Golly, he’s right, and we GREEKS need to do something to make our country competetive in the tourist industry”.

It is predicted that tourism all over the world will decline this year, thanks to the soaring prices of oil and the resulting inflation.

Edit: Ralph, so sad that someone claimed that ex pats found the “boat ride to Turkey more rewarding than their trip to Greece”.
As an ex pat and frequent traveler to Greece, I’d like to inform you that Greek Americans come to Greece, because they like to come home and not for the touristy part of it. And a trip to Greece is no comparison to any trip to Turkey (or anywhere in the world)
I know, you being an American is hard to comprehent this relationship of Greek Americans with Greece, but I thought to give it a try.
So your friend’s statement is false

My guess is that the number of tourists will decrease, thanks to inflation, the price of oil, the sad state of the dollar, and the concerns about the economy.
