I live near a really long river that stretches on for more than a Hundred miles and lately it has been raining almost every day and the river water has gone up.(4 feet) The last time it rained was a couple days ago, so the weather might be back to normal. If that’s the case how long should it take for the river water to get back to normal?

My friends and I are planning a weekend camping and canoe trip in Maine in a few weeks on the Saco River. We’re planning on bringing bottled water with us for drinking, but using the river water for cooking.

The river “looks” pristine but I know it’s not safe to drink without boiling.

How long should we plan on boiling the water before we use it to cook with?

Specificaly the Multnomah chanel of the Willamette River in Portland OR, US. At night and early in the morning on cloudy days the river is calm and glass like. But after the sun comes up there are waves. Usually the waves are small and move west with the rivers current but occasionaly the waves are large and flow east against the current. I know it can’t be attributed to boats going by because when they do the waves rush toward the banks and crash into the eastern flowing waves.
