First of all, they didn't leave a lot of Arabic influence, but they left a lot of Turkish influence.

Second of all, "a lot" are two words.

Third of all, it's pathetic that so many Greeks keep writing offensive things about Turkey. My country, Bosnia & Herzegovina, didn't experience any negative sides of the Ottoman Empire; as a matter of fact, after more than 400 years of the Ottoman rule, when it was occupied by the Austro-Hungarian Empire, most people moved to Turkey and their descendants still live there.

Here we go... let the thumbs down in. LOL :)

EDIT: ND, you have NO IDEA what you're talking about. We were not a tribe before the Ottoman Empire came here. Bosnia existed as an independent country during the Middle Ages, our history goes back since the 11th century, our country was a kingdom and it participated in the trade and everything. The reason we didn't have any negative sides is the fact that, even though Turks were invaders, they treated us well, unlike all the other invaders that occupied our country later. They were tolerant to different religions; while Christian Europe was getting rid of Muslims and Jews, the Ottoman Empire accepted all those - Jews, Christians of all kinds etc. They were all welcome. Tell me this: If it was the other way around, if Greece invaded Turkey, would you let them keep their religion?

And don't talk about things you know nothing about (i.e. my country).

In some things they are similar, but in some others they aren't. Besides, I don't think you can generalise like that; every country is unique. I, for one, wouldn't agree that Italy is so similar to Croatia, or Albania to Macedonia (there are some similarities of course). The same goes for Greece and Turkey.

By the way, I notice that every time a question like this appears, Turks try to say that their country is very similar to Greece, whereas Greeks do their best to prove that there is a light years distance between those countries. As always, the truth is somewhere in between: there are similarities and lots of Turkish influences in Greece (and even the other way around), but there are also a lot of differences.

Greek Barbie, don't laugh so much. Actually, Dalmacija and Istra, parts of Croatia on the Adriatic Sea, can be pretty similar to Italy. I have to admit that Slovenia and Croatia are the most "western" countries in ex-Yugoslavia. Concerning the mentality and that kind of things, Croatia is closer to Italy than, for example, to Serbia. Also, Slovenia seems to be closer to Austria than to Balkan countries. But you still can't pair those countries, of course, because each of them is unique. Each country had its own history and other components that shaped it exactly the way it is now.

And you Alexander, don't underestimate Albanians; you're not THAT MUCH different from them - of course some similarities can be found.

Finally, "Greek warrior" said: "You do know that Cyprus was almost annexed to Greece, like the rest of the Greek Islands were? But you'd have to take a look at history to see why this didn't happen."

Of course it didn't happen. Do you think they should have let you do that? I don't think so.

CONCLUSION: Every country is unique and can't be compared to any other country, but all Balkan countries have some similarities, and those similarities mostly came from the Turkish influence.

Spent one month in sicily going all around the island. never felt like a foreigner and i guess that was because im turkish. I was able to harmonize very easily, had no difficulties in my relations with the local. Depending on my personal experiences Sicilians and most of the Italians I met are quite like Turks I know. I believe that all mediterranean nations resemble one another in many ways.

Greeks and Turks also resemble and probably the best matching two nations. Both nations favor the same kind of music, have similar cuisine traditions and share a lot of words in their languages. These are the first proofs I can remember.

So yes Turkey is probably the most similar country to Greece

PS: Its not right matching Greece with Cyprus since both share the same heritage. It would be like matching Turkey with Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus..

Well, Greece in less than 200 years without Ottoman occupation managed to develop in a great rate, if you compare it to Turkey. While when we where conquered by the Romans, they had great love for science and culture, and people even referred to themselves as Romans than Greeks, with Ottoman empire it was an entire different situation. Frankly, the time we were conquered by the Ottomans, was the time that the rest of the world was making huge progress and we were left behind. If we wouldn't had been conquered by them, it is very probable that we would have developed more. They went down, and dragged us with them. There are very few positives if at all from that interaction.
Even now they don't have decent money to live, and they pay a huge amount to the military (among the first countries worldwide). Which makes us follow them in this stupid race, i bet we would rather give our money somewhere else if it weren't for them. Our military expenses would probably be half of those they are right now, similar to those of many European countries.
