Since Greece was once part of the Ottoman Empire what effect did that have on Greece? Did it cause alot of Greece to have something Middle Eastern about it like the music, the food, the way Greek people look or did Greece manage to remain the way they always were and it isnt really visible?

Actually Greece influenced alot of the Ottomans, right when the muslims took over that Istanbul part, which was once the capital of the byzantine empire, they took many of the ideas and art forms and even the records and kept them and improved them. one of the Chaliphs even rebuilt the city because he loved the architecture and the art it once had.

  2. Totally Blunt Says:

“Byzantine Empire” didn’t exist. Byzantium was a city state that existed on Sarayburnu before Roman dominance. What the Ottomans conquered was the lands of the Eastern Roman Empire, which was Roman Empire first but then was divided into two parts and the first Roman Ceasar was Konstantine, who founded Constantinople.

“The term “Byzantine Empire” is an invention of historians and was never used during the Empire’s lifetime. The Empire’s name in Greek was Basileia Rhōmaiōn (Greek: Βασιλεία Ῥωμαίων) — “The Empire of the Romans” — a translation of the Latin name of the Roman Empire (Latin: Imperium Romanōrum); or just Rhōmania (Greek: Ῥωμανία).

The term “Byzantine” itself comes from “Byzantium”, the name that the city of Constantinople had before it became the capital of Constantine. This older name of the city would rarely be used from this point onward except in historical or poetic contexts.”

The venerable İlber Ortaylı thinks the German historian Wolf decided to rename the empire so that the conquest of a Roman Empire wouldn’t look so striking, i.e. “The Ottomans didn’t conquer Rome, they only conquered Byzantium.”

    Back to the question:

    1. Ottomans werenot Arabic.

    2. They took over the Roman bureaucracy and improved on it.

    3. All lands conquered and ruled by the Ottomans carry traces of its culture, despite the endeavor to taint the rule of this brilliant empire with the words “dark ages”, i.e. “We got rid of the dark ages under Ottomans”. Which empire from the “dark ages” could conquer half of the known world?

    4. Ottomans learned and taught wherever they went. So, there is no saying “who took” and “who gave”.

    5. All ex-Ottoman lands have Ottoman food and Turkish words in their vocabulary.

  4. xanthochroi Says:

probably they affected each other but it’s not more than byzantine influence on the ottomans all the janissaries who lived in the balkans were mostly slavs and ottomans had strict rules for marrying within other communities have been around the balkans since 1300’s and didnt conquer syria, egypt etc. until 1500’s so what you mean by arabic influence

  5. amaannnn Says:

Greece was changing and influencing the ottoman empire in a positive way while the ottoman empire was changing greece in a negative way, full of suffering.

RE Lady S: The only reason Bosnia-Herzegovina prospered from Ottoman influence was because they didn’t have any infrastructure they where just a tribe, any organized tribe or group of people could have improved their system, no offense. Greece on the other hand was at the highest end of civilization, they where actually the creators of civilization, and after being conquered by a clan of people with an inferior infrastructure it was all down hill from there, they where brought down. Their schools, sport arenas, theaters, art galleries and all other essences of culture where crushed. and as I saw in another answer to this question someone said that everyone was prospering in that time but Greece was unlucky to be a part of the Ottoman empire for if they weren’t they would prosper too. But why where countries and tribes prospering in those times? Did they all of a sudden after so many years of existence find out how exactly their population should be run? The reason they found out is from Ancient Greece. When the Turks invaded Greece they uncovered a whole lot of knowledge that they couldn’t even begin to comprehend (things we still learn today from elementary school to University and beyond), lots of books (on many differnt subjects) where burnt but the best ones they kept for themselves. The turks and Italians and nations around Greece Slowly slowly began to use the Greek texts and put thing into action all the other nations began copying each other since they saw that the other had something they didn’t and the knowledge spread everywhere from turkey to Northern Africa to France and even England. This is why at that specific time there was such a big change in all those countries, and they all prospered and they where taken out of the dark and other major countries started recognizing them. This is what created the renaissance in Italy and across europe after the Start of the Ottoman Empire 1300AD it only took 100 years for the Renaissance period to start. Those countries where now given sports theatre art music and a whole culture derived from ancient Greece.

Some people have a phd from wikipedia..apparentley…they wouldn,t know who BYZA”S was or what byzantuim is pertained too…as usally the information is muddled up to confuse the question and make some people look educated…how ever iam shocked apprantley they can tell the dirffrence from arabic to turkish ..wow. and what some person said that the ottamns did not only learn from greeks this is true. but as a testamment ..they did not destroy constantinopoli..or damage historical and important building like SAINT SOPHIA..which they only defaced from the inside but added minaretts..on the outside to say that the whole building was of turkish desing..they even made this in to a musuem not even respecting thier own relegion..and as far as food is concerned …shock horror the so loved loukomi, sweet of turks will never admitt that it was a cypriot invention…and phasolia is indeed a turkish word for beans but the greek word for beans is rathikia.you see we adapted maybe a few words through every day use ,so what big deal some education..lol..the truth is that beans and bean soup for that matter was there from ancient times in greece… what did the turks teach us greeks in the end of 400 years? nothing zilch kaput zero……the most laziest nation on earth. the turks are,.every second turk is a pasaha…the typical turk will have ten kids and sit on his arse smoking a argulie all day and demand respect while his kids go out and robb steal and swindle money from tourist and unsuspecting people. then have the gall to call him self bey..lol..did they leave thier mark on greece you say..thank god no ..but unfortanttly they left thier mark on albanians and frymonians ..we only found this out by beign kind to them and letting them stay in our beautifully country..and then finding out that they are thives and robbers does that remind you you of some one? they even go one futher and demand that greece is thiers..lol..but keep on quoting wikipedia…thiere is no honour among thives or murderes..

Well, Greece in less than 200 years without Ottoman occupation managed to develop in a great rate, if you compare it to Turkey. While when we where conquered by the Romans, they had great love for science and culture, and people even referred to themselves as Romans than Greeks, with Ottoman empire it was an entire different situation. Frankly, the time we were conquered by the Ottomans, was the time that the rest of the world was making huge progress and we were left behind. If we wouldn’t had been conquered by them, it is very probable that we would have developed more. They went down, and dragged us with them. There are very few positives if at all from that interaction.
Even now they don’t have decent money to live, and they pay a huge amount to the military (among the first countries worldwide). Which makes us follow them in this stupid race, i bet we would rather give our money somewhere else if it weren’t for them. Our military expenses would probably be half of those they are right now, similar to those of many European countries.

made greeks much more narrow minded..

  11. Lady S Says:

First of all, they didn’t leave a lot of Arabic influence, but they left a lot of Turkish influence.

Second of all, “a lot” are two words.

Third of all, it’s pathetic that so many Greeks keep writing offensive things about Turkey. My country, Bosnia & Herzegovina, didn’t experience any negative sides of the Ottoman Empire; as a matter of fact, after more than 400 years of the Ottoman rule, when it was occupied by the Austro-Hungarian Empire, most people moved to Turkey and their descendants still live there.

Here we go… let the thumbs down in. LOL :)
EDIT: ND, you have NO IDEA what you’re talking about. We were not a tribe before the Ottoman Empire came here. Bosnia existed as an independent country during the Middle Ages, our history goes back since the 11th century, our country was a kingdom and it participated in the trade and everything. The reason we didn’t have any negative sides is the fact that, even though Turks were invaders, they treated us well, unlike all the other invaders that occupied our country later. They were tolerant to different religions; while Christian Europe was getting rid of Muslims and Jews, the Ottoman Empire accepted all those - Jews, Christians of all kinds etc. They were all welcome. Tell me this: If it was the other way around, if Greece invaded Turkey, would you let them keep their religion?

And don’t talk about things you know nothing about (i.e. my country).
