Sports was an important part of ancient Greek daily life. Most Greek cities had a public gymnasium (that’s where we got that word) where people gather to train and relax. Most men and boys played sports everyday because they enjoyed them and they wanted to keep fit. Sport was a good preparation for war. The Greek army had to be fit to march long distances and carry heavy equipment.
The Greeks had four national sports festivals. The most important was the Olympics, held in honor of Zeus. The Greek city of Olympia was an important center of athletics. The Olympic games were held there every four years, and were so important that in Greek life that they were used as the basis for the Greek calender.
Three of the events in the Olympics were boxing, weightlifting, and the pentathalon. The pentathalon included discus throwing, javelin throwing, wrestling, running and the long-jump. One event from back then is considered to dangerous to be included in today’s Olympics, the chariot race.
The Olympics began with a sacrifice to Zeus, because the games were religious, anyone who was caught cheating during the games was never allowed to compete again, cheating was considered disrespectful to the Gods.
